My PhD project is a philological examination of the manuscript corpus of Old Gutnish from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. I examine both the Old Nordic language of Gotland as well as the two main texts preserved in manuscripts, the medieval law code Guta Lag and the pseudo-historical narrative Guta Saga. The main focuses of my research are:
- The Old Gutnish language, its grammar and development.
- The origins of the Old Gutnish texts and their dissemination, both in Old Gutnish and in translation, in Late Medieval and Early Modern mansucripts.
The project is a combination of philology, comparative linguistics, textual criticism, codicology, and paleography.
