My PhD project is a philological examination of the manuscript corpus of Old Gutnish from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. I examine both the Old Nordic language of Gotland as well as the two main texts preserved in manuscripts, the medieval law code Guta Lag and the pseudo-historical narrative Guta Saga. The main focuses of my research are:

  1. The Old Gutnish language, its grammar and development.

  2. The origins of the Old Gutnish texts and their dissemination, both in Old Gutnish and in translation, in Late Medieval and Early Modern mansucripts.

The project is a combination of philology, comparative linguistics, textual criticism, codicology, and paleography.
