My research project is on 17th-century Icelandic manuscript production and the scribal network cultivated by the wealthy Icelandic bibliophile Magnús Jónsson í Vigur (1637–1702).
By researching the creation of new copies of popular texts and their transmission in 17th-century Iceland, I am considering how the manuscripts associated with Magnús í Vigur are linked with both the small Icelandic community in which they were produced and the wider networks of literacy and reading culture alive in early modern Scandinavia. I am researching the manuscripts themselves, along with their texts, scribes and patron, and the project will culminate in the production of a digital edition of one of the manuscripts.
The project is funded by the European Commission through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (Horizon 2020). The title is ‘Scribal networks in 17th-century Iceland: The patronage of Magnús Jónsson í Vigur’, with the acronym ICELANDIC SCRIBES.
