Suffolk place-names – with an emphasis on Scandinavian elements
The lecture is held by Keith Briggs, senior mathematician, BT Research.
Suffolk is the only English county which had some Scandinavian settlement and linguistic influence, but lacks a published comprehensive place-name survey. I am now making my own survey (partly published in a concise version in a new dictionary co-authored with Kelly Kilpatrick), and I am thus able to give a progress report on some of the Scandinavian elements.
Several new discoveries amongst minor place-names are pointed out. Because the Scandinavian settlement was sparse and not fully represented by village names alone, such small pieces of evidence accumulate to create a significantly revised view of the Danes in Suffolk.
