The collaboration between the episcopal sees of Iceland and the Benedictine order in the production of native episcopal lives and liturgical works in Latin

Research output: Contribution to conferenceConference abstract for conferenceResearch

Each of the three native bishop-confessors of Iceland, S. Thorlacus Scalotensis, S. Johannes Holensis, and S. Godemundus Holensis, was provided with a vita and liturgical lessons, offices and sequences in Latin. Although most of these works were lost in the wake of the protestant reformation, testimony, Latin fragments and a variety of Old Norse-Icelandic translations/adaptations provide ample information about the nature and production of these texts. In my short presentation I shall focus on what can be said about the early and mid fourteenth-century involvement of the Benedictines of Þingeyrar Abbey and Munkaþverá in writing a new vita of S. Godemundus bonus for the episcopal see of Hólar as well as in revising and supplementing older cult texts about S. Thorlacus with new Latin verses in collaboration with the see of Skálholt.
